AltaGas – Director, Government Relations
The Director of Government Relations plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing AltaGas’s government relations strategy. This leadership position involves collaborating closely with government officials, policymakers, and other stakeholders to advocate for the organization’s interests and objectives. The Director will work with internal stakeholders to develop and lead strategic policy advocacy initiatives, monitor legislative and policy developments, and effectively communicate the company’s positions on key issues. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Stakeholder Relations and Sustainability.
You Will:
- Government Relations Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive government relations strategy to advance AltaGas’ overall business interests and strategy with relevant government officials and policymakers at the federal, provincial (state), and international levels.
- Policy Analysis: Monitor legislative and regulatory proposals at the provincial/state and federal levels, and provide in-depth analysis of their potential impact on the organization.
- Advocacy and Lobbying: Build and maintain relationships with government officials, legislators, and regulatory agencies to advance the organization’s interests and advocate for favorable policies.
- Legislative Outreach: Represent the organization at government hearings, meetings, and events to articulate its positions and influence decision-makers.
- Coalition Building: Collaborate with industry associations, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to build coalitions and alliances that amplify the organization’s advocacy efforts.
- Compliance and Reporting: Ensure compliance with all relevant lobbying and reporting requirements, including filing necessary reports and disclosures as required by law.
- Integrate and work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, including legal, communications, and business units, to ensure alignment on advocacy strategies.
You Have:
- 10 years of experience (15 years preferred) in public policy, government relations, or advocacy, preferably focused on the midstream, energy export, and/or utilities sector.
- Solid understanding of federal and provincial/state regulatory frameworks and political issues relevant to the energy sector, both in Canada and the US, ideally.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and executing advocacy strategies and building relationships with government officials and policymakers.
- A solid network of key stakeholders, including both federal and provincial/state government officials, relevant agencies, and industry associations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels throughout the organization. Strong ability to partner and influence business leaders.
- Comfortable with complexity and ambiguity. Brings structure and definition to unclear problems and solutions. Confidently moves work forward without having the total picture.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to prepare and deliver Board presentations.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, such as political science, public policy, or business preferred.
- This position requires the ability to travel.
