About the Position


The Director reports to the VP Finance & CFO and works closely with the leadership teams at both Norfolk General Hospital and West Haldimand General Hospital as well as working collaboratively with the Laboratory Medical Directors. The role is responsible for the overall administrative oversight of laboratory services at both hospital sites in accordance with departmental and Hospital policies. The Director ensures that high quality care/service is provided in an efficient and effective manner. The Director will co-ordinate and organize activities of the various disciplines into an integrated service in accordance with the respective Hospital’s mission, vision, philosophy, and values. The Director is responsible for the planning, development, management, activities and evaluation of the departments of responsibility.

The individual is responsible to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the Laboratory by maintaining accreditation and regulatory requirements and standards; fiscal responsibility for human resources and operational budgets and will work in consultation with the VP Finance and plan for future applications and integration across the Corporations. The Director works in collaboration with affiliate hospitals and other organizations to ensure alignment of standards and goals. This includes standardization in the areas of technology, process and procedures.



Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides effective leadership and fosters a positive and productive work team.
  • Supports the priorities and initiatives that align with the corporate strategic plan.
  • Is responsible for assuring best practice is implemented in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Is responsible for assuring that department safety, quality and fiscal outcomes are achieved.
  • Is responsible for assuring departmental staffing supports safety, quality and fiscal outcomes.
  • Is responsible for coordinating departmental processes, including communication, with those of other hospital departments.

Qualifications, Experience, Competencies


  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science Degree or College Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, A.R.T. and BSc
  • Current license and in good standing with the CMLTO
  • Canadian Healthcare Association Department Management Diploma or equivalent, preferred;
  • Graduate of a recognized Quality Management Program preferred;
  • Participates as a current member of associations, as appropriate, including but not limited to: CMLTO, CSMLS, MLPAO, OAML
  • Advanced level knowledge in Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Histology preferred
  • Minimum 5-7 years recent progressive experience in a hospital laboratory setting, having demonstrated;
  • Leadership/management skills;
  • Interpersonal verbal and written communication skills;
  • Analytical thinking, accountability and decision-making skills;
  • Responsibility, accountability, and sound financial management;
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and application of IQMH and regulatory requirements;
  • Working knowledge of laboratory and hospital software systems; Meditech knowledge an asset
  • Possess knowledge of all pertinent regulations, legislation, and business/hospital theories
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize workload;
  • Knowledge and adherence to Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Control principles, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates evidence of maintaining clinical competence and continuing education
  • Demonstrates knowledge of quality management, continuous improvement, quality control, quality assurance and inventory control principles as applicable to hospital Laboratory operations
  • Demonstrates responsibility, accountability and decision making and sound financial management
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, accountability and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrates leadership skills including teaching and coaching, conflict resolution and change management
  • Working knowledge of lab and hospital software systems
  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication and team building skills and diplomacy
  • Ability to interact effectively with others within and outside of the organization (i.e. staff physicians, patients, suppliers, Ministry of Health, Pathologists, Occupational Health and Safety, CBS)
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage projects
  • Experience in a unionized setting
  • Available for regular assignment of Hospital Administrator on-call responsibilities (assigned on a rotating basis to cover evenings and weekends)
