About SNOLAB
SNOLAB is an international facility for world-class underground physics research with an expanding program in astroparticle physics and underground science. Located 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, the facility features an air-conditioned clean room, surface laboratories, and enables groundbreaking experiments in:
- Detecting galactic dark matter
- Investigating neutrino properties
- Conducting life sciences research
- Monitoring environmental conditions
- Enhancing nuclear security
- Advancing quantum science
The Position
SNOLAB is seeking an innovative and accomplished Director of Research to support the Executive Director in developing the organization’s scientific program. This critical executive role involves:
- Driving research excellence
- Overseeing strategic resource allocation
- Ensuring successful execution of major scientific projects
- Leading high-impact initiatives
- Collaborating with global research partners
- Enhancing SNOLAB’s international reputation in deep underground science
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Research will:
- Develop and implement SNOLAB’s scientific program aligned with organizational goals
- Strategically allocate research division resources to optimize project success
- Provide leadership to the Research Group, Scientific Support Group, and Project Management Office
- Oversee the SNOLAB Project Life Cycle from initiation to deployment approval
- Foster collaboration with international research institutions, industry partners, and funding agencies
- Lead high-level scientific, technical, and safety reviews
- Represent SNOLAB in media, government, and stakeholder engagements
- Ensure excellence in research operations, including quality assurance and safety compliance
- Serve as the Executive Director’s designate when required
Qualifications
Education
- PhD in Physics (Particle or Nuclear Physics preferred)
Experience and Skills
- Internationally recognized for scientific excellence
- Proven track record of research leadership
- Extensive experience in high-level research program management
- Strong executive presence
- Outstanding communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams
- Expertise in securing and managing research funding
- Experience developing strategic partnerships with industry and research organizations
- Project management expertise (asset)
