Drop-in Support Worker (Permanent-part time 15hrs)

Wednesday 7 am-3 pm, Thursday 10 am-6 pm


ABOUT THE STOP:

The Stop Community Food Centres mission is to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds community and challenges inequality. The Stop began over 40 years ago as one of North Americas first food banks and has since grown into a vibrant community centre that uses food as a gateway to addressing many issues, including poverty, the environment, social isolation, and health in one of Torontos lowest-income neighbourhoods.

Summary of Duties: The purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining a safe space and offering respectful service in The Stops Wychwood Open Door Drop-in program, particularly meal service. This is a permanent, part-time position at 15 hours per week. This position works within a team of other Stop staff, volunteers and agency partners.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Drop-In Program:

  • Ensure that the Drop-in space is safe, welcoming and inclusive to community members
  • Apply and enforce food handling, sanitation and health and safety guidelines as required by Toronto Public Health
  • Assist with crisis intervention and prevention as necessary
  • Assist with and coordinate set-up of program space for meal services
  • Ensure that volunteers are supported in their role to provide respectful and dignified service and accomplish daily tasks
  • Ensure necessary program supplies are ordered and deliveries are accepted, and stored in appropriate areas.
  • Responsible for maintenance of program space and supplies through weekly cleaning, organizing and rotating of stock in pantry, and other program areas
  • Responsible for proper shut-down of program space at end of day: wiping down/sanitizing tables, counters, sinks; ensuring all equipment has been cleaned and put away and all program areas are locked
  • Provide program participants with referrals to other Stop services.
  • Collaborate with drop-in engagement worker in providing weekly drop-in activities.
  • Maintain daily recording of appropriate statistical and information as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

General:


  • Ensure that Drop-in programming reflects The Stops policies and procedures (e.g. Anti-Discrimination/Anti-Harassment )

  • Attend monthly all-staff meetings, weekly team debriefs, and other meetings related to job description, as required

  • Participate in agency-wide events as needed

  • Work within the team of Stop staff, board, and volunteers

  • Maintain administrative records, as required

  • Participate in training opportunities, as requested

  • Maintain knowledge of existing agency and program policies and procedures and implement them consistently

  • Represent The Stop constructively when engaging with the public, other organizations and media

Qualifications:


  • Educational background in social work/social services/human services work or equivalent education and experience.

  • Minimum two years working in community services.

  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills are essential.

  • Highly developed interpersonal / communications skills and ability to build effective relationships with participants, team members and community partners.

  • Understanding of and experience working in programs serving participants with complex intersecting needs, including homelessness, mental health issues, addictions and histories of trauma - strong understanding of client-centred, trauma-informed anti-racism, anti-oppression practices.

  • Ability to work constructively as a team member in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Experience working with marginalized people and people of diverse cultures and abilities.

  • Additional languages besides English are an asset. ,


Work Conditions: Working in the Drop-In may require some physical effort (walking around the Drop-In space, lifting, cleaning, and serving meals); the Drop-in engagement worker will be an active presence there. There may be the risk of exposure to potentially unpredictable behaviours and situations.
