Our Ideal Candidate

Allnorth is currently looking for a Capital Cost Estimator to work with our Fibre & Chemicals team. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for the preparation, assembly and qualification of project cost estimates varying in size, scope and location.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and present capital cost estimates for projects as defined by an agreed-upon scope that will be used for management decisions and presented to our clients
  • Draft estimate plans through evaluation of scope, contract, desired estimate type / quality and time / resources available
  • Prepares capital cost estimates that may be conceptual (order of magnitude), feasibility level , appropriation/budget authorization level, or detailed control baseline estimates.
  • Prepare cost studies utilizing historical data, statistical analysis, and cost and quantity comparisons
  • Innovative and develop new techniques as required to meet specific needs
  • Reviews design scope criteria and develops quantities for undefined scope assumptions in coordination with others
  • Participate in establishing pricing structures to be applied to quantities for estimates
  • Obtains vendor information and lead the continuous development of our estimating databases
  • Prepare estimate basis and assumption documentation
  • Perform cash flow analysis and extrapolates cost curves based on experience of scheduled-activities and cost correlation analysis
  • Perform and review escalation calculations
  • Identify risk items and assigns risk levels to portions of the project work
  • Identifies measures to mitigate risk
  • Establish format and content of summaries and reconciliations, including segregation of cost according to level of confidence
  • Review estimates for completion and technical accuracy ensuing quality and alignment with project scope, schedule and execution plan
  • Take a lead role in estimate reviews and presentations
  • Interface with various team members on specific sections of estimate presentations


What You’ll Bring to the Team

  • Bachelor’s Degree with minimum of 5 years of related professional experience or High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of 10 years of related professional experience
  • Advanced knowledge of estimating large complex Engineering, Procurement and Construction projects in the heavy industrial sector
  • Experienced with the development of direct costs for all disciplines – Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical, Instrumentation and Automation.
  • Understanding of indirect cost build-up for large heavy industrial projects, including engineering, project management, construction management, procurement services, temporary facilities, owner’s costs, etc.
  • Understands estimate types, classifications, and components
  • Experience with practical application of AACE International Recommended Practices
  • Understanding of the craft labour union landscape in Canada and the US as it relates to build-up of craft labour rates, productivity factors and geographical considerations
  • Knowledge and experience in quantity takeoffs, statistical analysis, life cycle analysis and management of personnel
  • Knowledge of construction methods and techniques in area of specialization and have a general understanding of other disciplines
  • Familiar with engineering and construction codes and standards
  • Thorough understanding of cost index and escalation projection sources
  • Understands and contributes to risk and contingency assessments
  • Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills and ability to address a group
