Job Title: Health and Safety Lead
Job Description
We are seeking a Health and Safety Lead to join our team. This role involves promoting, communicating, and overseeing safety compliance through information sharing and training of project personnel. The position requires a balance of field operations and office-based tasks, with flexibility to adapt to varying customer expectations and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Responsibilities
- Foster a strong safety culture among employees, vendors, and customers by adhering to and promoting safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Identify and communicate workplace hazards, and take corrective actions or seek assistance to address unsafe conditions.
- Develop, recommend, and implement safety programs, practices, and procedures, considering all relevant risks and controls.
- Document discrepancies and collaborate with technical personnel to resolve issues and close gaps.
- Analyze needs, determine specifications, and coordinate the procurement of protective safety equipment and materials.
- Conduct inspections to identify hazards and potential risks, and develop and communicate corrective actions.
- Provide informed recommendations on safety standards and procedures, utilizing analytical insights and technical knowledge.
- Assist in planning and managing major safety assurance efforts, ensuring comprehensive coverage and adherence to best practices.
- Offer technical guidance and training to other safety analysts, fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and skill development.
- Lead by example to promote and maintain the client’s culture and core values, ensuring open communication on safety concerns.
- Monitor health and safety regulations, communicate updates to the project team, and lead discussions on potential impacts and changes.
- Investigate incidents, injuries, and near misses to determine causes, prepare detailed reports, and work with the project leadership team to implement corrective actions.
- Develop and conduct safety training programs for employees, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
- Regularly audit safety programs, practices, and procedures to identify areas for improvement, and conduct field inspections to ensure compliance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
- Degree, diploma, or certificate in a related field (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in health and safety within heavy civil construction projects.
- Familiarity with construction site safety protocols, regulations, emergency procedures, and Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) requirements.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong judgment, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including technical writing.
- Ability to manage and work with multi-discipline technical teams, handle complex issues, and maintain effective working relationships.
- Motivated self-starter capable of working reliably and efficiently with minimal supervision.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Tunneling experience is an asset.
- CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) certification or similar designation is an asset.
- Experience working on joint venture projects is an asset.
Work Environment

The work environment includes regular audits, field inspections, and the use of various safety equipment and materials.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $55.00 – $60.00/hr.
Workplace Type
This is a fully onsite position in Coquitlam, BC.
