Title: Immigration Consultant (6-Month Contract)
We are posting this job on behalf of a charitable organization in Waterloo Region that is dedicated to supporting newcomers and refugees to Canada. This organization is creating a social enterprise to offer Immigration Consulting services to the broader public, with a focus on transparency and trustworthy, affordable fees for those who need it most, and partnership with the non-profit and business sectors.
The charitable organization is hiring a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) for a six-month contract (37.5 hours per week) between $30-$40 per hour, commensurate with experience. There is the potential for renewal to a permanent employment position based on performance outcomes.
OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION:
- Deliver professional, empathetic, and ethical immigration consulting services to individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
- Prepare, review, and submit immigration applications, ensuring accuracy and compliance with IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) regulations.
- Manage client cases from start to finish, tracking progress, following up on pending applications, and responding to government inquiries.
- Represent clients in immigration matters, liaising with government agencies, employers, and legal professionals as needed.
- Assist in developing and furthering the goals and objectives of the charitable organization.
OUTCOMES:
- Submissions for study permits, work permits, Express Entry, PNP, and other programs are error-free and timely, increasing approval rates for our clients.
- Clients receive clear, transparent, and professional guidance throughout the immigration process, resulting in positive reviews and referrals.
- Client cases are managed systematically with proactive follow-ups, reducing processing delays and improving overall efficiency.
- The parent charitable organization earns additional income and a strengthened ability to serve more newcomer and refugee clients in the Waterloo Region.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct in-depth consultations to assess client eligibility for immigration programs, including Express Entry, PNP, study permits, and work permits.
- Prepare, review, and submit immigration applications while ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with IRCC regulations.
- Collect, verify, and organize required documents from clients to ensure all necessary paperwork is submitted correctly.
- Track application progress, provide timely updates to clients, and respond to IRCC requests for additional information.
- Stay updated on Canadian immigration laws, policies, and regulatory changes to provide accurate guidance and risk mitigation.
- Liaise with government agencies, employers, recruiters, and legal professionals to facilitate immigration processes and advocate for clients.
- Assist clients with denied applications by preparing reconsideration requests or appeals when applicable.
- Identify potential clients, conduct consultations, and implement strategies to attract and retain immigration applicants.
- Promote immigration services through social media, webinars, and partnerships with community organizations to enhance client outreach.
- Maintain strict confidentiality, follow ethical standards, and continuously improve expertise through professional training and development.
- Record and maintain necessary daily log, statistics or data as required.
- Provide written reports on program activities, needs, challenges and outcomes.
- Provide input into program developments and evaluation as needed.
- Assist with advocacy, public engagement, education, meetings, and community presentations.
- Develop a trauma informed approach to your work with clients.
- Other relevant duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EDUCATION
- RCIC designation (in good standing with CICC).
- 2+ years of experience in Canadian immigration consulting, ideally with exposure to work permits, study permits, express entry, and LMIA processes.
- Applicants must hold professional liability insurance.
- Cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed approach, especially for vulnerable populations.
- Some knowledge of the refugee claim process in Canada.
- Moderate level of knowledge of social/settlement services in Waterloo Region, Guelph, and surrounding communities as well as some knowledge of relevant services on a provincial and national level.
- High level of communication skills, written and verbal, in both in-person and virtual contexts.
- Excellent assessment and listening skills.
- Excellent time management skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a larger team.
- Ability to be present with empathy as the parent organization represents a diversity of worldviews, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities and religious affiliations.
- A high level of self-awareness with sensitivity to cultural and life experiences including trauma and harm.
- Able to attend to own self-care and be a member of a team working to ensure collective wellbeing.
- Must always maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
LANGUAGE
- Primary fluency or bilingual professional proficiency in English is a requirement.
- Preference will be given to those with a proficiency in one or more of the following second languages: French, Arabic, Spanish, Tigrinya, Punjabi/Hindi, Amharic, Turkish.
ADDITIONAL VALUE-ADDED COMPETENCIES
- Experience working with interpreters is an asset; training will be provided.
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is a plus.
POSITION HOURS AND LOCATION
- This is a full time position for 37.5 hours/week, Monday-Friday.
- Primarily in-person at the charity’s location in Waterloo Region; limited hybrid opportunities once well established in role.
- Contract Term: 6 months (37.5 hours/week), with the opportunity for renewal.
- Start Date: April 14, 2025.
VARIATIONS: Successful candidates must be available for occasional evening and weekend hours to support clients and/or attend organizational events and activities.
REMUNERATION: Remuneration set between $30/hour to $40/hour, commensurate with experience, subject to all applicable statutory deductions.
