Operations Manager - Waste Management


About the Role


We are seeking an experienced and proactive Operations Manager to oversee the daily operations of a high-volume waste management and recycling facility. This hands-on leadership role ensures safe, efficient, and compliant operations while supporting waste diversion and sustainability initiatives.


The facility operates nearly 24/7 throughout the year, and this role will work closely with senior management to optimize operations, enhance productivity, and deliver excellent customer service.


Key Responsibilities


  • Oversee all aspects of facility operations, including waste handling, recycling processes, and scale operations.
  • Lead and mentor a team of up to 25 employees, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and operational procedures.
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor preventative maintenance to maintain safe and efficient operations.
  • Manage operational budgets, identify cost-saving opportunities, and optimize the use of labor, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and operational policies.
  • Monitor quality control and operational performance metrics, identifying areas for continuous improvement.
  • Address customer inquiries and complaints, maintaining high standards of service.
  • Manage labor relations, including union interactions and front-line employee engagement.
  • Prepare and submit regular operational, safety, and financial reports to senior management.
  • Lead or participate in safety meetings to maintain a positive, productive work environment.


Qualifications


  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field with prior management experience.
  • Proven experience leading operational teams and managing complex facility operations.
  • Strong understanding of operational KPIs and performance management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage employees at all levels.
  • Experience in waste management, recycling, or environmental services is an asset.
  • Operational financial management experience is a plus.
  • Positive, solution-oriented mindset with a commitment to safety and sustainability.
