Part-Time Academic Program Technologist – Pre-Service Firefighter (Emergency Medical Responder)

Located in Barrie and reporting to the Associate Dean, Human Services and Community Safety, the incumbent supports the learning process by demonstrating the use of the equipment and by reinforcing applied pre-learned principles / theory related to lab skills, procedures and assessment. The incumbent works to establish an appropriately supportive learning environment for students providing guidance and assistance to students in “live fire” and/or practical situations. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Academic delivery supports, which includes:
- Retrieves, sets up and dismantles fire training equipment, supplies and resources to meet curriculum needs
- Ensures the training equipment is safe and returned securely to its designated location
- Shares technical expertise and/or advice to academic staff and students as required e.g. shares real on-the-job experiences to enhance the practical training exercise.
- Ensures all lab safety standards and standard operating procedure requirements are being followed
- In consultation with faculty, makes recommendation and designs lab set up for skill development based on current practice used in community practice agencies and in accordance with standards of practice
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, providing observations on a cohort of students’ skill progression, attendance and problems; attends curriculum committee meetings providing input regarding firefighter skills, curriculum review
- Assists faculty with the update of the student/faculty lab resource manual
Student contact and record keeping which includes:
- Assists faculty by organizing and facilitating student practice, demonstrating and reinforcing applied pre-learned principles / theory by providing feedback using pre-developed skills checklists and the application of principles and theory
- Monitors, records and tracks students’ progress and readiness of fire fighter skills for proficiency and safety using manual tracking sheets and communicates any concerns to students and faculty
- Collaborates with program coordinator and appropriate faculty to formulate a plan of action, and provides individual coaching, to a group of students struggling to demonstrate skill competency. Consults with faculty and student to plan activities to meet individual students’ needs
- Ensures students are performing tactical exercises in a safe manner
Qualifications:
- Valid Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder certification
- Successfully completed a one-year postsecondary certificate in a relevant field of study
- At least three years’ experience working in a pre-hospital setting (paramedicine and/or fire service) and experience in training and demonstrating medical skills with the ability to do all aspects of emergency medical response
- Demonstrated ability to communicate information in a clear concise manner
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders
- Ability to self-direct, work independently as well as a team member
- Knowledge and understanding of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and awareness of health and safety rules and regulations
- Computer skills using Microsoft Suite
- Standard First Aid & CPR Basic Life Support with AED certification
- Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills
- Ability to plan, coordinate and manage time effectively
- The following would be considered assets:
- Valid Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR and Emergency Medical Responder Instructor certification
- AEMCA certification
- Successfully completed a one-year postsecondary certificate in Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training or NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications and NFPA 1072 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/ Weapons of Mass Destruction Operations (Core) and Mission Specific
- Certified in NFPA-1041 Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications Level One
