The Nursing Resource Unit (NRU) at CAMH is an internal staffing team comprised of Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and Program Assistants, who deliver exceptional client care across all inpatient units at CAMH, in the event of strategically planned and unplanned staff absences.

Reporting to the NRU Manager, the full-time, permanent Registered Nurse will be on-boarded and cross-trained to work across all inpatient clinical areas, including: acute, forensics, rehab, and specialty units (i.e., geriatrics, concurrent youth, medical withdrawal, extended observation).

You will complete a competency-based orientation and then apply and maintain practice-based competencies throughout all clinical assignments. You will provide high-quality nursing care to patients/clients and families and will engage in ongoing and structured learning throughout the NRU to achieve this goal.

As a member of an interprofessional team, you will provide client-centered mental health and addictions, as well as general nursing care. In addition, you will ensure the security and safety of the inpatient unit to which you are assigned, and practice in accordance with professional regulatory standards, CAMH Policies and Professional Practice Model, and the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice.

Your skills include the ability to make behavioural observations; perform ongoing physical and mental status assessments; monitor the client’s response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions; develop, implement and evaluate interprofessional client-centred care plans; and effectively communicate with other team members. You will support and contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements.

The successful applicant will work a rotating schedule that includes 12-hour days (0730-1930), 12-hour nights (1930-0730), and weekends, at the Queen Street site.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable you to develop the Nurse-Client relationship and work within a collaborative and diverse interprofessional team.
  • Effective organizational and problem-solving skills, including a demonstrated ability to think critically.
  • Demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour.
  • Demonstrated interest in continuous learning and professional development.
  • Able to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary.
  • Computer literacy is required.
