CBC Hamilton is looking for a daily news journalist, assigned to work a range of shifts, including evenings and weekends.
You are a strong communicator who works well under pressure, is comfortable going live on air and can confidently break down a wide range of topics for the audience in a clear and concise way. You love telling the human stories behind the headlines, and love breaking news. You work well under pressure and thrive in fast evolving situations.
You will be expected to pitch regularly and deliver compelling storytelling on a daily basis. The work you do will be to deliver stories every day for platforms that feature digital writing, audio and video.
You have a track record for finding meaningful stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of the greater Hamilton area and have worked to build contacts within its equity-deserving communities.
Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.

Key Tasks:
Contribute original ideas daily
Develop content including pitching, writing, researching, gathering, analyzing, reporting and presenting for the appropriate platforms
Gather accurate stories in a breaking news situation and deliver them promptly
Write and package stories in a variety of treatments including live hits, social media posts, digital articles, voice reports, script/clips, talk-tapes, debriefs
Prepare scripts for presentation; ensure adherence to style and format
Decide which elements should be included in an item a story or item, their order, length, and sequence as well as the transition from one element to another
File from the field using a variety of technologies including Dejero, iPhone, etc.
Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources within Hamilton's various communities and regions
Contribute ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of station objectives
Identify and pursue leads and angles that push stories forward
Objective Criteria:
- Three years of directly-related experience that includes proven ability in the field and knowledge of digital and video journalism
An understanding and awareness of issues, events and communities particular to Hamilton and surrounding areas
Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies
Ability to work flexible and long hours as needed
Understanding of the public broadcaster's role and responsibilities
University degree in journalism or equivalent
Valid full G or equivalent driver's license
Subjective Criteria:
Excellent reporting and interviewing skills
Proven experience in delivering breaking news on a variety of platforms
Superior critical thinking skills
Ability to synthesize complex topics quickly and work to deadline
Ability to write clearly, accurately and in a concise manner
Passionate about exploring Hamilton stories, issues and ideas
Creative storyteller who enjoys experimenting with different story treatments
Profound understanding of our social media platforms and how to engage and expand our audiences in those spaces
Proven track record ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling
Contributes to the diversity of perspectives on our team, and has personal experience with pitching and producing stories on under-represented communities
Ability to work with a variety of teams
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, tight-deadline environment
Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously
Self-aware; able to identify own growth areas
