Solid Waste Technical Advisor


Location: Brantford, ON

The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity development to First Nations communities in Ontario. By offering a wide range of specialized services and expertise, OFNTSC helps to enhance the quality of life, promote technical self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within these communities.

We seek a highly motivated and skilled Solid Waste Technical Advisor to join our team at OFNTSC. Under the guidance of the Regional Solid Waste Specialist, the Solid Waste Technical Advisor will provide a wide range of advisory and technical services to our First Nation clients on the operation, maintenance, and development of waste disposal sites, transfer stations, and waste diversion initiatives. This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues, an understanding of compliance with environmental regulations, and project management skills.

These tasks must be executed in alignment with the culture and values of OFNTSC while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain filing system following office file and records management procedures.
  • Prepare, review, and manage the reporting requirements.
  • Submit weekly and monthly schedules to the supervisor as required.
  • Assist with event-related activities, as requested.
  • Assist with maintaining the Solid Waste Portal, ensuring it is complete with educational and technical resources for clients.
  • Manage consultant contracts, work plans, and deliverables.
  • Prepare funding applications for Corporate solid waste management initiatives.
  • Oversee and improve waste diversion programs, ensuring compliance with Ontario legislation and regulations.
  • Be familiar with the fundamentals of operation and maintenance requirements for landfills and transfer stations to effectively advise client communities.
  • Be familiar with various funding agencies and their respective application and reporting processes.
  • Present information at meetings, workshops, and forums.
  • Prepare technical reviews and site visit summaries for First Nation solid waste management systems.
  • Maintain records of solid waste infrastructure and programs in Ontario First Nations.
  • Prepare minor capital applications, Requests for Proposals, and project reports related to funding and infrastructure.
  • Provide training and advisory services to build First Nation waste management expertise.
  • Organize and coordinate solid waste management training sessions.
  • Interpret and analyze federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with client communities, stakeholders, and government agencies, understanding procedures and protocols with First Nation Communities.
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating solid waste management training and workshops, providing field assistance, and maintaining client records and evaluations.


Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 2–5 years of related experience.
  • Sensitivity to the unique needs of First Nations peoples.
  • Must possess good project management skills to effectively manage contracts, work plans, and deliverables.
  • Experience with the development and implementation of solid waste management initiatives.
  • Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills.


Conditions:

  • Reliable, insured vehicle and Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license.
  • Some out-of-town traveling is required through the province of Ontario.
  • Maintain proper certifications and memberships, and pursue ongoing education to meet OFNTSC skill requirements.

  • Priority will be given to First Nations applicants who meet the mandatory requirements.
