Your Opportunity:
Under the direction of management, the Assistant Head Nurse provides frontline operational leadership and developmental guidance to a multidisciplinary team, supporting the delivery of Public Health services in Red Deer, Alberta. This role works collaboratively to operationalize programs aligned with legislation, continuing competence, quality improvement, and strategic priorities. The Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supporting education needs, including new staff orientation and ongoing training, in partnership with Clinical Educators and Best Practice Coordinators. The position supports management and Best Practice Coordinators in implementing practice standards, quality improvement initiatives, and risk management activities. Strong leadership, coaching, and change management skills are essential, along with the ability to translate knowledge into best practice and foster effective working relationships with staff, Primary Care Alberta partners, and community agencies. The Assistant Head Nurse oversees staff assignments, patient flow, and acts as a role model, clinical resource, and advocate for nursing staff. This role contributes to high quality patient and family centered care and supports the implementation of operational priorities for the Red Deer Public Health service area. Description:
As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of PCA.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing with a minimum of five years of experience in Public Health, including Public Health Nursing, School Health, Well Child Clinic, Communicable Disease Control, and/or Maternal Child. Previous or current Assistant Head Nurse experience or Charge Nurse responsibilities with strong clinical skills in community Public Health Nursing. Experience working within team specific service delivery models in Public Health. Proficiency with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong organizational and communication skills; able to work independently and manage competing priorities. Experience orientating staff and precepting students. Effective critical thinking, problem solving, and relationship building. Skilled in change management and conflict resolution. Demonstrates strong integrity in supporting both staff and leadership.
